Staying Safe Around
Propane

At Home Gas, safety is our top priority. We’ve put together essential safety tips to ensure you stay safe and informed when using propane.

Propane leaks can have an odor like rotten eggs. Educate your family so they can recognize the smell.

  1. Immediately put out all smoking materials or other open flames. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones, or cell phones.
  2. Shut off the gas supply- if it is safe to do so, turn off the main gas shut-off valve on your propane tank. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise).
  3. Leave the area immediately.
  4. Report the leak – to Home Gas on (345) 949 7474 or after-hours on (345) 640-610

Do you have a working propane detector?

All propane appliances should have a propane detector near appliance. These should be placed down low (if possible), or behind cabinets for a built-in stove.

Regularly test your detectors to ensure they are working properly

Secure Your Tanks: Ensure all propane tanks are secured to prevent them from tipping or floating away.

Shut Off the Gas: Turn off the gas supply at the main valve before the storm hits.

Check Supplies: Make sure your propane supply is adequate and your tanks are in good condition.

Emergency Kit: Include a portable propane stove or heater in your emergency kit, along with extra propane cylinders.

Inspect for Damage: Check your propane tanks, lines, and appliances for any damage before using them.

Listen for Leaks: If you hear a hissing sound or smell propane, leave the area immediately and follow the steps for a propane leak.

Professional Check: Have a qualified technician inspect your propane system before turning it back on.

Dome covers on propane tanks should never be locked, as the emergency shut-off valve, which is crucial for shutting down the entire system in an emergency, is located beneath the dome. These covers are specifically designed to protect the valves and fittings from weather conditions, not to restrict access.

The Propane Industry Safety First Programme has been established to ensure Cayman’s propane infrastructure is in excellent working condition.

Our team of inspectors will be visiting every Home Gas residential and commercial customer to inspect and document propane systems including the tank, regulators, and infrastructure to verify they are in good working order. This will include the logging of equipment, manufacturer, model, serial numbers, shut off valves, and condition.

This information will be compiled and reviewed by the Home Gas Service Team. Any safety or performance concerns will be discussed with customers. The safety data will then be made available to CIFS (Cayman Islands Fire Service) and other emergency responders.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding our Safety First Programme inspections please call/WhatsApp us on (345) 949 7474 or email us info@homegas.com
