Propane is an an affordable, clean fuel used to power appliances and reduce your energy costs. It is most commonly used for cooking, heating water, drying clothes and as a fuel for engines. Propane is nontoxic, colorless, and virtually odorless, although in the propane we supply to the Cayman islands, an odourant (ethyl mercaptan) has been added to the gas so it can be detected. Effective odourization serves two primary purposes: 1) odourization of propane allows the detection of a leak before it reaches a hazardous level and 2) the scent enables early detection of gas to repair leaks and reduce further gas loss.
Propane is a portable, clean and efficient energy source which supplies about 12 percent of total world’s energy needs. It is a byproduct of natural gas processing and petroleum refining, and exists as both a liquid and a gas.
Sometimes referred to as liquefied petroleum gas, LP gas, or LPG, propane is a byproduct of crude and natural gas refining processes. Propane is an environmentally responsible fuel. It is much cleaner than diesel fuel, kerosene, or electricity. It is also up to 99 percent efficient. Diesel-burning electric power plants emit twice to three times as much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as propane, at a 28 percent efficiency rate. Propane is a valuable alternative to electricity and significantly reduces emission of greenhouse gases.
